And I have my mind...and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge

- Tyrion Lannister

How did you improve yourself today?

From my illiterate monkey brains to yours, picking up a book is a great way to make yourself a better man in today’s society. The Guerrilla Rats Reading List is a foundation for literature that I find beneficial to the development of a King’s mind. Listed are the works I found worth my time and encourage you to learn from them too.

The Holy Bible

Let the Gospel be the first book you see here, for if you were to read only one let it be this. I have no right to write a synopsis for the Bible but all men, followers of faith or not, should read and learn the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Believe the teachings or not, if men were to live their lives in the way Christ describes, your community, your tribe, and your homes will be filled with strong and exceptional men. My recommendation for those who have never opened up a Bible, start with the Book of James. It lays the foundation of how to live the life of a Christian. If you don’t have one check out the link below to Shepherd Defensive. They are a great company who offers exceptional gear but the best part about is that give out The Bible completely for free, with optional shipping.

HOLY BIBLE – NIV – MILITARY EDITION

A Message to Garcia
Elbert Hubbard

“It is not book-learning young men need, nor instruction about this or that, but a stiffening of the vertebrae which will cause them to be loyal to a trust, to act promptly, concentrate their energies: do the thing - Carry a message to Garcia”

A Message to Garcia is a short essay (It’s 2 pages long. Even if you’re borderline illiterate like myself, you have no excuse to pass this up.) that summed up is about how young men need to be able think for themselves. Learn to solve a problem you are given without bombarding everyone with pointless questions you can figure out yourself. If you believe in the ideology of Self-reliance and haven’t read this essay, I can’t encourage it enough. Hubbard lays down the foundation and starting point of how to act upon the ideas. Now that you know of this read it. Don’t be lazy.

Wild at Heart
John Eldredge

“Let the world feel the weight of who you are and let them deal with it”

This book here got me into reading. John Eldredge talks about how young boys are born with a natural desire for adventure, danger, and to prove themselves; to be men. He uses examples of Christ to push his message by saying that all these cravings to be wild are gifted to us by our Heavenly Father. Eldredge literally compares Jesus to William Wallace. You don’t get much more badass then that!

We Fight Monsters
Michael Kurcina

“In every man’s life comes a road sign warning him of a dark path ahead but he goes down it anyhow.”

We Fight Monsters is a prime template for being a modern man. It talks about the good and the bad, how to deal with the bad, and more importantly that sometimes bad things just happen and what makes you a man is how you deal with it. Each entry is only a few paragraphs at most because this book is really a giant compilation of Michael Kurcina’s Instagram page, Spotter Up. So if you or another King needs to hear some quick words of encouragement, check out We Fight Monsters or go to his site: https://spotterup.com/

The Divine Right of Resistance: Biblical Options for Opposing Tyranny
Phillip Kayser

“God will not fight our battles in place of us. He has not promised to go instead of us; He has promised to go with us.”

If tyranny enters your life, how would you deal with it while still keeping your eyes centered on the Lord? Phillip Kayser gives us example after example on how the Bible tells us how to deal with this. Everything from taxes to weapon (and firearm) ownership, we can look to the Word for answers. And when talking about tyranny, you don’t need to jump to the overreach of a government body, it can be any power of authority that abuses their power. This book is a great book to have in your library.

Meditations
Marcus Aurelius

“Hurry then to the end, abandon vain hopes, rescue yourself, if you have any care for yourself, while the opportunity is still there.”

Is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius really a book I need to tell you why to read it? It’s a book FULL of wisdom about everything in life. It’s a book written by an Emperor of Rome known for his stoic philosophy. Need I say more? Add it to your collection.

On Killing
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

“The opposite of courage is cowardice, but the opposite of fortitude is exhaustion”

On Killing can be viewed as a text book if you will on the psychological effects on the act of killing. What makes solider less likely to kill, to what tools or equipment makes it easier for one to process the act of killing, to the training soldiers go are put through today to desensitize them to the killing of the modern battlefield. There’s so much topics brought up in this study I would of never thought of, it’s been a long time since I was sucked into such a information heavy topic.
